Project Description
Stimulated by rapid economic development and the need for better environmental prediction,
the atmospheric science communities in East Asia countries have enjoyed considerable growth
over the past 10 years. As a result, the East Asia countries have established many exciting
and innovative research facilities and projects focusing on atmospheric sciences.
These facilities and projects hold great promise for significant advancement in atmospheric sciences,
and present important opportunities for education, research, and international training for
American scientists, engineers and educators. Recently, the U.S. atmospheric science community
has been undertaking similar efforts. Therefore, it is of strong U.S. national interest to
actively pursue research collaboration with these research establishments at their early
stage of development and entrain U.S. students and junior scientists in these activities.
The purpose of this project is to establish an international linkage between the National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research
(UCAR), the U.S. university community and educational, research and operational institutions
in East Asia. The collaboration with the atmospheric sciences communities in East Asia is
timely and highly beneficial to the U.S. scientific community. In particular, U.S. students
and junior scientists are exposed to exciting new research facilities, projects, and
opportunities. Such research collaboration enable us to integrate the American
workforce in atmospheric and related sciences into the East Asia science and technology
community, an integration that is of strong national interest. The activities to be
included in this international linkage project include: planning visits, research experiences
for students, dissertation enhancement, graduate research internships, postdoctoral fellowships,
joint workshops and seminars, and collaborative research. Following is a list of current and past projects.

Many exciting research facilities and projects are either being planned or being carried out in East Asia countries.
These include GPS remote sensing, model and data assimilation system development, and mesoscale field experiments.
Participation in these projects and collaboration with research and operational institutions in East Asia countries
will allow us to leverage resources from these countries and allow us to make significant advances in atmospheric research.
Collaboration with these projects and facilities will provide valuable education, research and international training for U.S.
students and junior scientists.
