ANOUNCEMENT
Third US-Korea Joint Workshop on Storm Scale and Mesoscale
Weather Analysis and Prediction
February 20-22, 2002
Boulder, Colorado
This is the third joint workshop between the United States and Korea with a goal
to identify and facilitate collaborations on problems of mutual interest in an
effort to enhance observation, analysis, model development, and basic research
needed to support and enhance operational storm and mesoscale numerical weather
prediction. The first workshop was held in February 1996 in Norman, Oklahoma,
and the second workshop was held in October 1997 in Seoul, Korea. Under the sponsorship
of US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Korea Science and Engineering
Foundation (KOSEF), the third workshop will be held at the Foothills Laboratory
of NCAR, Boulder, Colorado, on February 20-22, 2002.
The interest of this workshop includes broad aspects of storm-scale and mesoscale
weather analysis and prediction, with emphasis on:
(1) Mesoscale observing systems,
(2) Model development
(3) Data assimilation and prediction,
(4) Dynamics of mesoscale convective systems,
(5) Typhoon,
(6) Mei-yu front, and
(7) Hydrological aspects of heavy rainfall.
Approximately 12~15 scientists from Korea will participate in this workshop,
and about equal number of US scientists will attend from US universities and
research laboratories. In an effort to encourage education and international
training of US students and junior scientists, we would like to invite the participation
of US graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in this workshop. Travel support
will be available to US university participants, including students and postdoctoral
fellows.
A preprint volume will be prepared for this workshop. Each participant will be
required to submit an extended abstract to Bill
Kuo by 8 February 2002. The extended abstract should be prepared according
to the standard AMS extended abstract format.
The abstract should
be submitted in electronic form using either the Microsoft WORD format (preferred)
or the .pdf format. The total length of the abstract should not exceed 6 pages.
