South Korea flag Fourth Joint Korea-U.S. Workshop on Mesoscale Observation, Data Assimilation and Modeling for Severe Weather U.S. flag

13 - 15 February 2006
Seoul, South Korea

This is the fourth in a series of workshops between the United States and Korea, designed to facilitate the collaboration on scientific problems of mutual interest, in an effort to enhance observation, analysis, data assimilation, model development and basic research needed to support operational storm- and mesoscale numerical weather prediction. The first workshop was held in February 1996 in Norman, Oklahoma, and the second workshop was held in October 1997 in Seoul, Korea. The third workshop was held in February 2002 in Boulder, Colorado. These bi-lateral workshops stimulated a number of interesting collaborative research projects on heavy rainfall prediction, hurricane prediction, radar data assimilation, and model development between scientists of the United States and Korea. Participation of U.S. scientists in this workshop is by invitation only.

This workshop is jointly funded by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) and the U.S. National Science Foundation Office of International Science and Engineering (NSF/OISE). With an effort to provide international education, training and research experiences to U.S. students in atmospheric sciences, we have developed a Student Program as part of this workshop. We will offer travel support for up to 10 U.S. students (must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident) to participate in this workshop. Additional scientific and cultural activities will be arranged immediately following the workshop (16-17 February 2006) to provide additional opportunities for U.S. students to interact with Korean students.

The workshop will be held at the conference facility of the Hoam Faculty House at Seoul National University. U.S. invited speakers and students will also be housed at the Hoam Faculty House.

For details regarding this workshop, visit the workshop details page. For further inquiry, please contact either Dr. Bill Kuo (kuo@ucar.edu) or Prof. Dong-Kyou Lee (dklee@snu.ac.kr).
