Sixth Data Users Workshop

Sixth Data Users Workshop

Sixth FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC Data Users' Workshop
30 October - 1 November 2012
Boulder, Colorado U.S.A.

Workshop Overview

The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for scientific discussions between the RO community and the weather, climate, and space weather communities. These discussions are crucial for maximizing the scientific opportunities provided by past, present, and future RO missions. A dialogue between the providers of RO data and the data users is also important to ensure optimal use of these data for both research and operational applications.

Since the launch of the first COSMIC constellation in 2006, five COSMIC Data Users' Workshops have been held for the purpose of highlighting accomplishments in the areas of RO operations and algorithm development, meteorology, climate, and ionospheric applications using COSMIC data accessed from the COSMIC Data Analysis and Archive Center (CDAAC). CDAAC is now transitioning from FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC to FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2, as well as processing data from other missions. CDAAC will continue to process multiple RO missions using consistent RO inversion algorithms. The COSMIC-2 mission will provide a revolutionary increase in the number of atmospheric and ionospheric observations that will greatly benefit the research and operational communities. Workshop participants will be able to learn more about the status of this exciting new mission. Several of the topics will focus specifically on creating a bridge from the current COSMIC mission to new RO missions, including COSMIC-2, and will facilitate a connection between the RO community and the broader science communities.

The workshop will include the following:

  • Dialogue between data providers and data users
  • Update the user community on the status of current and planned missions
  • Status of CDAAC data processing and data availability
  • Scientific investigations with COSMIC data
  • Results obtained with GPS RO, TIP, and TBB data
  • Data validation experiments
  • Comparisons with other sensors - including other RO missions (CHAMP, SAC-C, GRACE, TerraSAR-X, METOP/GRAS, TechSat-21)
  • Status of Precise Orbit Determination and Excess Atmospheric Phase Processing - Algorithm improvements and validation studies
  • GPS RO retrieval improvements
  • Data assimilation into numerical models - Impact studies from NCEP, ECMWF, UKMO, and other leading weather centers
  • Climate studies with RO data - climate trend detection, climate model verification and improvement
  • Ionospheric weather, climate, variability, data assimilation, model verification and improvement
  • NWP model verification and improvement using RO data - improvement of micro-physical processes and parameterizations of planetary boundary layer, cloud/convection schemes, and gravity wave activity
  • Plans for future validation experiments, campaigns, or other projects in the neutral atmosphere and ionosphere
  • Update on the status of the FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 mission
  • Studies related to the FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 mission
